The Train

This Deck aims at putting a lot of Supports, Upgrade and Allies on the table to thin your deck and take maximum advantage of a total of 5 double and 2 Trippe Ressource cards. On top of that, it should be able to consistently stun the villain. Your general game plan is slowing the villain down while you build your engine of destruction, and Hulk gets angrier and angrier the more he gets hit from the villain.

The Trains Engine I: Ressource Package

Let's start with the Ressource Package, because the Recent The Power in All of Us is a game changer for Hulk. It means the expensive neutral allies with high Thwart Values and the Support Cards that give you a long time benefit will mitigate Hulks poor Hand size. As with all Handsize 4 heroes, it is important to mulligan correctly.

  • You have 5 double and 2 triple Ressource cards in a 40 card deck. If you mulligan aggressively, you have a good chance to have two of them in your opening hand, and Bruce Banner might help you if you don't.
  • Nick Fury is also insane in your opening hand. If you have him, play him and draw three extra cards, with a chance to get even more double ressources.

In general, your dream start involves playing Nick Fury and playing either Avengers Manions, Hellicarrier or Quincarrier.

The Trains Engine II: Upgrade Package

Protection has so many of those cheap Upgrade cards, and deck thinning is extra good with those 7 double/triple ressource cards. Unflappable will again help you with the handsize. Immovable Object and Electrostatic Armor will whittle down the villain. Boundless Rage is extra good, as you probably won't need to go to Alter-Ego. Honorary Avenger is basically a 0 for 2 thwart with most of your allies. Not an upgrade, but a support, but nice for Hulk if he is stunned: The Night Nurse.

Your Allies: The Thwart

You allies are for thwarting. Who needs Chump Block if you play Hulk. And yeah, they are expensive, but thanks to The Power in All of Us, playable, and can handle your thwart problems for many turns.

  • As mentioned above, Nick Fury is insane in a deck with 7 double Ressources.
  • Heimdall and War Machine are long term thwarting solutions. Don't be afraid to sacrifice War Machines Toughness for an extra thwart.
  • Lockjaw in the discard is fantastic. It's almost an extra hand card. On top of that, you can immediately replay him once he leaves the game.

The Stun

With Iron Fist, Tackle and Never Back Down, you have 5 cards to stun the enemy. While it can be awkward to have an even smaller hand after playing Never Back Down or Counter-Punch, the turn after that can be used to play one of those cheap upgrades.

Additional card choices

Counter-Punch is basically a 1 for 3 damage. You want to defend every turn anyways. Once you have Boundless Rage, it's even better.

The fun of a fully build Train Engine

Well, once you played a certain amount of upgrades, Supports and allies, you will see how the game completly changes. A thinned deck that already starts with 7 Double Ressources is just fun to play. Unstoppable Force gets much better if that card you draw is not an awkward single card, but can actually be played with your Mansions, Carriers and Double Ressources. Once the train is moving, there is little to stop Hulk.

Cool concept. There's a lot of expensive cards in this deck, but I like your idea of thinning the deck and cycling through the "fun" stuff faster.

cool list!

I was working on a similar list with "bait and switch" in mind. Were you looking to add it when it becomes available?

Also, how well does it perform in solo? I tend to be obstinate and try a million things to make all heroes perform decently in solo (my only option as everyone here is secluded due to the pandemic). Hulk, however, can get so damn frustrating...

Armored Vest and Never Back Down can make a cool combo.

Hulk defends for 5, hopefully takes no damage but is exhausted. The villain is stunned. So, next turn nobody attacks but you can play cards .. hopefully without a Hulk Smash in your hand you can't play. Haha.

@neothechosenBait and Switch is an excellent card for solo, the lighning ressource is a bit awkward but it could have a place here. That beeing said, the "Power in All of Us" + Neutral ally Synergy is probably enough thwart, and the idea is that you basically defend every turn with this deck, probably never going to Alter-Ego (which itself is thread mitigation). I think it's probably for a different deck. That beeing said, it would probably remove Counter-Punch.

Honestly, I think there is a bias that 4-handsize heroes are somehow bad, but interestingly Ironman isn't considered to be bad even though he needs at least 2 turns to even reach a handsize of 4. Nobody complains about him because he has a inbuild plan to get a better handsize that you don't have to concentrate on. With the other handsize 4 heroes, you have to solve the economy puzzle (that beeing said, you have to do that with every hero, but it's more crucial for those who have a handsize of 4).

I think Hulks economy is basically solved with The Power in All of Us enabling the high cost Support cards and thwart allies. This was a game changer for Hulk solo for me. Hellicarrier and Quincarrier make Hulk Smash and unstoppable force easy to play. And then Hulk has the extra 2 tripple ressource cards, so putting supports on the table means a thinner deck which again means you will draw those more often.

@Randito Yes, and Unflappable gives you the extra card draw. I wouldn't worry about Hulk Smash. This is (as the name suggests) more of an engine build, you build your board, and once you are set up, you can start smashing. It's Hulk getting stronger if he is angry, in a nutshell.

What do you think of Nerves of Steel (the resource for events).

Mar 04, 2021 Incredibul · 3382

@zephyr100sadly, it is only for defense events, which is why it's not in here. It would only pay for Never Back Down.
