This deck was tested solo against the expert Age of Apocalypse campaign. Minor testing was done in multiplayer against expert Master Mold.
“Back in my day we only had a landline. Now you kids are glued to these things.” - James Howlett aka Logan aka Wolverine, probably
Our Canadian bub Wolverine is a great candidate for the Suit Up/Sidekick/Side-by-Side combo of cards because he’s the best at what he does, and what he does is basic attack for base 3 with piercing. Through a combination of flipping down to alter ego and recovering we can keep Wolverine healthy by healing him for 5. While this is more than his max, after Uncanny X-Men and a slew of upgrades Wolvy will get to 8 HP. On top of that, he will be hitting for 5 and thwarting for 3. But that’s not all!
Make Graham Bell Proud
Jubilee can go on an extravagant Shopping Spree to get Wolverine a new Cell Phone. Through the power of this incredible new technology and Leadership Skill, he can get another +2 added to either attack or thwart. And don’t be afraid to ring up Jubilee or any other ally in a pinch!
Run out of battery in that cell phone? No problem, just throw it away! Jubilee has infinite credit at the Apple store to buy a new one with another Shopping Spree.
“I’m nobody’s sidekick. Except for Jubilee’s, apparently.” - Hugh Jackman’s character in the X-Men films
More than anything this is a Sidekick deck through and through, utilizing the aforementioned Side-by-Side and Sidekick combo to keep Wolverine ready and healthy and keep Jubilee flexible to generate multiple wild resources in a turn or use either of her basics in a pinch. The quicker you can get Wolverine on the table with Sidekick attached the better, and Suit Up is a great card to look for in the mulligan to try to make that happen. From there, you’ll have additional upgrades to add on to Wolvy including Uncanny X-Men as a team wide buff, Inspired, and Danger Room Training.
As If
Jubilee provides incredible support on top of everything Wolverine does. While Wolverine is a key piece in managing threat and clearing minions, Jubilee focuses on being a card play engine with her ability and doubles, stunning and confusing, and using Grande Finale as a finisher.
This deck likes to flip to alter ego, especially on turns where you have Suit Up to grab a key ally. Since we will be flipping down frequently to both heal Wolverine and grab Shopping Spree, Down Time makes our own recovery stronger when we want to heal Sidekick Wolverine and Mutant Education allows us to shuffle back in our own cards (often Shopping Spree to then be able to grab it with our alter ego action, and then typically any double, a needed event, or even Wolverine if he ends up getting taken out). And of course, Wolverine is haunted by his Weapon X past, so that gives us another thing to do in alter ego to get events or resources (just like the weapon X scientists would’ve wanted).
Jubilee loves having more resources to both pay for cards but also to get the multiple resource type kickers for her own cards, so The X-Jet and X-Gene are included here as more wild resource generators. To make sure Jubes is once an X-Man always an X-Man Honorary X-Men is included to take advantage of the X-Jet, Uncanny X-Men’s cost reduction bonus, and Utopia in alter ego.
On Speed Dial
Wolverine and Jubilee can't do it alone, so they have a few of their best friends on speed dial:
-
Beast is a great ally for Jubes to bring back any of her resource cards.
-
Cyclops is a great finisher, increasing Wolverine's/any other ally's damage and boosting Firecracker and Grand Finale.
-
Gambit is just an all-around great ally allowing us to look at the upcoming encounter cards to find a potential flip opportunity.
-
Phoenix is a solid thwarter and allows Wolverine to heal and ready (don't tell Scott).
-
Professor X is another all-around great ally getting a solid thwart, block, and allowing us to either confuse the villain, in rare cases stun a minion, or ready Wolverine (when he enters, if Utopia is out, you can ready both Jubilee and Wolverine this way).
Final Thoughts
Overall this is a really fun deck that has some cool play lines. Managing hero and alter ego is key to making this deck work so you can keep Wolverine healthy and grab key pieces while in alter ego. Sidekick/Side-by-Side decks can often feel like the ally is more important than the hero, and while Wolverine will be doing the heavy lifting for damage and thwart, Jubilee’s support-focused kit really makes them feel like a fun team.
I found this deck can work well in most scenarios, but stalwart villains can make most of Jubilee’s kit feel bad in general and really high tempo scenarios can make it hard to find space to flip down. In testing I had to play in a very particular way to beat expert En Sabah Nur, so I am thinking the big boys like expert Ronan would be pretty tough.
There is one odd card out - Unlikely Duo. I mainly wanted to include it because I think the team up cards are fun, but frankly one of the player side schemes is likely better in this slot (probably either Call for Backup or Build Support).
Finally, I didn’t do much testing for multiplayer but what I did do the deck still performed well. Jubilee provides great table support with stuns and confuses, Wolverine has more to do with more minions and side schemes around, Shopping Spree can be used by others to grab key Items, and Cell Phone gets the added benefit of its most fun use of being able to use basic activations out of turn. You are also not overly reliant on any of your supports, so if another X identity really needs them instead you could just replace them with any useful player side schemes.
This is my first published deck list and write up so I hope you enjoy and let me know if you have any feedback!
