Stop Red Skull's Lies

Captain Marvel puts a stop to Red Skull with her band of Avengers...and Maria Hill. She uses her energy resources to power this team of Avengers...and Maria Hill...to prevent Red Skull's schemes from overwhelming the group.

Assemble Your Team

There are two types of opening strategies for this deck depending on how your first draw and mulligan goes. First strategy: aim for Avengers Tower or Helicarrier with a double or triple resource. This will help you get allies down and still have resources to play your events.

The second opening strategy is to get your defenses up and running. Mulligan for a Cosmic Flight and Captain Marvel's Helmet. This will let you defend for your allies and let you use your resources to keep allies out as much as possible.

Allies Do a Lot

The core of this deck is to use allies. Keep them in play while they have use, then defend with them or fully activate them so you can cycle them again. Vision and Black Knight are incredibly powerful to keep out at all times. Give them a Sky Cycle so you can get multiple activations and use First Aid to heal them. Lead from the Front will help the activations be more powerful. It takes 3 activations to make Lead from the Front as effective as a For Justice!.

Hawkeye and Maria Hill are great for their effects, but you'll want to discard them when they've used their counters or effects. This can be through consequential damage or by defending.

A fully powered Vision on a Sky Cycle can do 6 thwart or 8 attack. Then use a First Aid so he can do it again.

Allies Power You Up

For any ally that you want to keep out, you can use Earth's Mightiest Heroes and shift the activation to Captain Marvel. This means that an ally with 1 THW can shift the activation for Carol's 2 THW. This means you can Lead from the Front and use Earth's Mightiest Heroes to get extra power and keep an ally out.

Power Cycle

This deck has a lot of to help power Vision and Captain Marvel's Rechannel.

In fact, both Rechannel and Alpha Flight Station will help you dump useless cards to help you draw into a resource or a card that can be more useful in the moment. Alpha Flight is an action, so definitely use it on the hero side when you have a card you know you aren't going to play.

No Crisis in Aerial

If you use aerial, don't be afraid to use her worst card...Crisis Interdiction. It's more useful than it first appears and all because of the word Then. This means that the first 2 threat can remove from a crisis event and the second 2 threat can be removed from the main. Take that Mass Chaos or Hydra Patrol.

Multiplayer

This deck has cards that make it work in both multiplayer and solo. First Aid and Lead from the Front make this deck lean into a solo strategy because you can them and Sky Cycle on other players' boards. Similar to above, if you are going to use Lead from the Front on someone else, make sure they can do at least 3 activations to make it worth while.

Minimalist Matchups

The goal is to create a series of decks meant to be accessible to players who don't have access to all of the content. It can be tough to find decks that feel strong and work in a limited collection. So this series will be heroes built to take on the toughest villains using only the Core Set, Villain's Campaign Box (if applicable), and Hero Pack (if applicable). This means each deck will only require 2 or 3 packs.

Love the splash of the non-Avenger Maria Hill. I do this probably every time too haha. This minimalist series is an amazing practical resource for new players. Keep it up!

Great deck and theme! I don't have a limited card pool these days, but I love these minimalist matchups. It's nice to see that the older cards can still hold their own.

Thanks, @Web-Warrior Fanatic! I debated if Maria Hill might work against this deck, but she’s just too good. I don’t think she can work against any deck. 2 THW, +1 card, and a defense…it’s like a poor man’s Nick :)

@Greg I appreciate that. It’s been fun to see old cards and combinations do powerful things. The biggest surprise has been to realize how new cards have shifted my playstyle. These have been fun exercises reminding me of other, just as good ways to play.

And both of y’all are welcome to give recommendations for a next deck even though you might not benefit or need it :)

Great deck construction concept: Minimalist :)

Umm, If you are gonna start a voltron or have a keeper and multi-use (inc healing) an ally, why is there no Inspired?

Maria Hill is awesome in MP. And since you don't have Mighty Avengers in your source material, she doesn't break the team spirit. She is about the same as Nick Fury (not a poor man's version). They are both effectively 2ER for Thw2 & a block. Maria Hill gets better with more players at the table though, and sure, Nick Fury has better chance of getting a multi-mana but the lore of averages is that it is not too much better (esp. with only about 8 permanents)

As you are using RoRS set as a source, perhaps Goliath would be a great ally here. You can use him as 5ER for 4x2Thw(8) naked = solid. Or, since you are already running some Earth's Mightiest Heroes/Sky Cycle/Team Training etc, you could get up to 3 uses from him at 5Att in a single turn.

@Sluggie those are some great ideas! First, I do want to apologize to Maria Hill. On re-reading, that phrase was definitely more pejorative than humorous. You're right that she's incredible in her own right, and I'd hate for someone to see her relative to Nick Fury when she's absolutely an auto-include with very few exceptions.

As far as Inspired, it's a great add-on, but it came at a tempo cost that I couldn't seem to recover from. Since this deck centers on readies, it's nice to use Sky Cycle to ready an ally where you used Earth's Mightiest Heroes. It was also an resource. I think you could totally sub out the Lead from the Fronts for it if you wanted, but it does mess with the resource balance a bit.

With Goliath, he's absolutely great in this deck, especially for thwarting. I originally had him in here. You could probably sub out Hawkeye or U.S. Agent for him because you're not shifting the resource balance. But for some reason, I wasn't finding myself playing him as much as I was able to get the other allies on the table. So the deck kinda left him behind due more to my playstyle than his usefulness.

Still, those are absolutely great ideas for someone who wants to tinker with the deck to make it their own, and I'm glad you posted them.

I love that you are deck building for a limited card pool! Great deck here, well thought, explained and designed. Thanks for sharing it!

@AncientEpithet thanks so much! I appreciate the kind words and hope these will be helpful, especially for people with limited card pools.

I really love this idea for deck building, because I can still remember when I was a new player and would have benefited off of this deck so much! I definitely need to fill out the form.

Thanks, @tunicv. That’s definitely who I hope this becomes a good resource for. And I’ll totally take any suggestions. It’s been fun to realize how strong old combos are.

I just built this to give to my kid to play our next round with. She loves captain marvel! And she loves throwing out meat shield-- I mean allies to defend and deal damage.

That’s awesome to hear, @quincarter! I hope she really enjoys the deck.
