Nick Fury works great in justice. Combine his natural affinity for Basic Thwarting with the new Grapnel Launcher and we're in business.
I'll be bringing this deck to MC/DC '26 along with these others:
- Flying Fortress - Falcon Protection
Let's Get Thwarting
The gist of this deck isn't hard to pick up: boost Nick Fury's basic thwart activation, then basic thwart a lot.
- Innate Perception lets you thwart for 3 out of the gate. Combine this with Heroic Intuition and Heroic Conditioning (ideally in the first deck pass) to get up to a basic thwart of 5.
- These thwart upgrades should probably take priority, but compete with Nick's excellent kit upgrades. You shouldn't pass on Fury's Flying Car, which will allow you to ready once per turn. This doubles your thwarting power per turn.
- Grapnel Launcher is great with Nick Fury for several reasons: He doesn't have any Restricted cards in his own Kit, and it causes you to make a Basic Thwart which lets you kick his Gather Intel Hero ability to add threat to his suit.
- As his basic thwart grows, the Value of a Grapnel Launcher grows with it. Even with just +1, the Grapnel Launcher would be 3ER for 4 Thwart, which is For Justice! level. Anything beyond that is gravy.
- additionally, Grapnel Launcher can be saved until you're ready to pull off a combo with Overwatch, or play it preemptively for a later turn when you're suddenly overwhelmed with threat.
- Add in 3 copies of Turn the Tide, which give you more, cheap ways to spend the suit threat. Assuming you're kicking it to the max, Turn the Tide is 1ER for 6 damage. If you want bigger numbers, Brains Over Brawn or Waylay could be good options, too... but they're expensive. Pulling one of those off would be cool and good... but it might be the only thing you do on your turn (besides the basic thwart you used to prime it)
- I've added 3 copies of Skilled Investigator, but you can drop the number if you're playing with fewer players. I've included several player side schemes to flex his thwarting power into tempo for the table, and extra card draw is cheese on the cake.
- Cloak and Dagger are a good justice combo. Because Cloak doesn't have consequential, he can thwart for 2 every turn forever. Pulling Dagger back out can be a resource sink (if you have Energy or The Power of Justice, but Dagger can just chill on the board as well. She's still doing a good job if all she's doing is blanking the Acceleration on Cloak. And even if she's not, Cloak can thwart for 2 (while he only adds 1). These are just a well designed combo that can flex into Thwart, Damage, Block, and/or Resource Sink when you need it most.
Alternates and Subs
- I've found The Raft to be a pretty valuable utility add to almost any justice deck, because it can lock away problematic minions. You might not even know which minions are going to be most problematic before the game begins! But it's not required.
- I did not add Show of Empathy, but it's another fun utility that Justice has which can solve a minion problem, and sometimes make for unexpected stories within the game (most exciting with Nemesis minions).
- Evaluate Threat is a fun play, but I was wary of too many cards in the deck, and not everyone at the table may have a SHIELD or Avenger card to grab with it.
- In my last iteration of this deck, I have 3 copies of Justice Served for extra Nick Fury readies.
- additionally, One Way or Another is a good play for Nick, but it's a bit of a gamble in 3-4 player games... you might bite off more than you're ready to deal with.
- Even the Odds is fun in multiplayer, but I've played a lot with it this year, and it went back in the box because of fatigue.
- adding upgrades/supports/player side schemes can increase the max power of this deck, but decrease the reliability of setup. Adding more thwart/utility events can increase max power of the deck, but can also dilute Attack events, making it harder to control your suit form.
Hope this gave you some ideas of your own! Have a Great day!
