Back when Ghost-Spider released, I built a Protection deck around her that fundamentally altered my perception of Marvel Champions. This was because I had never really explored Protection beyond it's ability to reduce some damage and buff my hero's defense.

But Ghost-Spider showed me that truly playing Protection meant creating a hero that lived and acted during the Villain phase, which wasn't easy to get used to.

But Sinister Motives provided a lot of opportunities to learn.

I ended up creating a GS protection deck that was so effective (because of her hero deck, not my deck-building) that a lot of Villains became sort of a joke.

To be fair, I play two-handed solo almost exclusively. Which means GS was deflecting loads of damage so that her partner could build and dish out punishment. She was basically the perfect partner.

Well here we are, almost exactly two years after the release of Sinister Motives, and I thought it would be a good time to revisit my original deck and see what improvements could be made.

Frankly, there wasn't a lot to change. Not because my original vision was unflawed, but because there really haven't been a lot of meaningful additions to Protection that improve what I was aiming for. Mostly, I wanted a protection hero that could ready after defending. GS has this ability built into her Hero events. So I just needed a few more cards for those times where I wanted her to be able to defend a third time, take another action on her turn or flip down to recover.

Well, there weren't any new cards that leaned into that.

However, Angel's Aerie provides GS with the ability to skip using her recovery once in a while by building up a load of tokens as she defends. Judoka Skill is another way to dramatically reduce damage from an enemy while also being an upgrade that can thin your deck for a bit.

I also swapped out Expert Defense for Subdue, since the latter doesn't require you to actually defend against an attack.

For the most part, this deck remains a solid defense option that relies on GS's natural abilities to block loads of damage while responding with big swings during the Villain phase.

A few Indomitable and Desperate Defense and she can easily save your bacon in two-handed solo.
