THOR S-TIER RULING INTRODUCTION

Compared to what Thor does in comic books and movies his Marvel Champions design is underpowered.

How is it that "The God of Thunder","The Mighty Thor" isn't among the top choices when taking on the toughest opponents in Marvel Champions?

Myself and many others have tried to get a truly strong deck built with Thors original design. We've tried every aspect and had to revert to building decks with an excessive amount of allies and scattered strategy veins in an attempt to make up for what Thor's original design lacks and still he continues to linger in B-tier or C-tier.

My "S-Tier Ruling" changes some abilities and creates new abilities in Thor’s character cards to fit cinematic and comic book events taking Thor from "Dad bod to God bod" placing Thor into the S-Tier.

"AS LONG AS WE ARE ALL IN AGREEMENT...."

THOR S-TIER RULING

“I NOTICE YOU’VE COPIED MY BEARD.”

  1. Thors hand size is 6 as Odinson and 5 as Thor. Asgard will still increase hand size by 1 when in play.

"THAT'S MORE LIKE IT"

  1. Thors basic thwart is increased to 2.

“HAVE AT THEE!” / "IS THAT THE BEST YOU CAN DO?!"

  1. During any phase while in hero form, Thor is considered engaged with a minion as long as there is one in front of him and can draw two cards anytime during each phase and only once per phase.

  2. When in hero form and he attacks or is attacked by any minion in play he engages that minion from that action and can draw two cards once per phase.

  3. Upon flipping from Odinson to Thor and a minion in is front of Thor he can draw two cards.

  4. If during villain phase and there is no minion in front of Thor and a minion is placed in front of Thor as the last revealed encounter card and as the final thing to happen during villain phase then the villain phase is considered over when the minion is revealed and Thor is not eligible to draw two cards during villain phase unless the minion quickstrikes in which case the minion engaged Thor and he can draw two cards that phase.

"YOU WANT ME TO PUT THE HAMMER DOWN?!" / "HE NEEDS THE AXE!"

  1. Jarnbjorn (Stormbreaker) gives Thor the aerial trait.

  2. If ever Mjolnir is out of play and just Jarnbjorn (Stormbreaker) is in play then Jarnbjorn (Stormbreaker) maintains Mjolnirs +1 to Thors basic attack.

  3. Thors maximum basic attack with Mjolnir and Jarnbjorn (Stormbreaker) in play is 3ATK.

  4. After Jarnbjorn (Stormbreaker) is initially drawn and put into play it can be called on by Odinson "Worthy" action as Mjolnir is.

  5. Jarnbjorn (Stormbreaker) retains its ability as written on the card and can also be thrown, exhausted and returned to your hand as Mjolnir is when a Hammer Throw is played. This allows up to two hammer throws to be played per turn if both weapons are in play.

  6. The 8 available damage in a Hammer Throw can be distributed among any number of minions in play and the villain in any sequence. Any remaining damage after selected minions are eliminated is dealt to the villain as overkill.

  7. Once Mjolnir or Jarnbjorn (Stormbreaker) hit a minion during a Hammer Throw it must eliminate it before it can move to the next target. allowing you to only partially damage a minion or the villain if it the last target hit.

  8. A minion or villain with a tough status will take no damage and absorb all remaining of the 8 damage when hit. (Remember to hit tough enemies last)

"YOU GOT THE LIGHTNING......"

  1. Lightning Strikes can apply to all enemies in play, the villain and each minion in front of all players if 3 or more energy resources are discarded by Thor for that event. Delivering the 3 or more damage to each enemy in play and ignoring tough status if aerial.

  2. If fewer than 3 energy resources are discarded during Lightning Strike then the event is played according to the original rules.

“THAT MAN HAS NO REGARD FOR LAWN MAINTENANCE”

  1. For Asgard! can be used in alter-ego and hero form.

TEAM-UPS:

"HOW ABOUT THAT." IRON MAN

  1. If Thor targets Iron Man with a Lightning Strike that would deliver 2 damage then Iron Man's next attack does 5 additional damage.

"ARE WE DONE HERE?" CAPTAIN AMERICA

  1. If Mjolnir is in play and Thor targets Captain America with a basic attack and Captain America simultaneously plays a shield block then each enemy in play takes 3 damage.

"BECAUSE THATS WHAT HEROES DO."

I have published two "S-Tier Ruling" decks as Thor has two primary approaches to attacking enemies. Obliterates them with his pure lightning and/or destroys them with his brute strength.

40-50 cards is not enough cards to fully express both of Thors approaches in one deck. My two decks will have expressions of each approach in them but one is dominate in the build.

I built each deck with more than 40 cards because of the enhancement of the "Have at thee" ability and to accommodate a comprehensive list of high value strategy veins to be consistently drawn.

Choosing between two decks based on the villain, encounter deck and style of play I think is more dynamic and enjoyable.

  1. "The God of Thunder" deck expresses and emphasizes Thor's ability to charge up his Lightning Strike and Dive Bombing with lightning enforced Hammer Throw and axe throws turning the tide. Designed primarily for heavy minion games.

  2. "The Mighty Thor" deck expresses and emphasizes Thor's brute strength face to face with villains. Designed primarily for games with fewer minions.

"EVEN WHEN YOU HAD TWO EYES YOU ONLY SAW HALF THE PICTURE."

To win with this deck you must give Thor time to gain momentum and charge up by prioritizing his God of Thunder cards, God of Thunder, Enhanced Reflexes and Resourceful allowing for Thors eyes to start glowing with his true power.

"ARE YOU THOR, THE GOD OF HAMMERS...?"

Keeping minions in front of you all game and manage all minions in play to keep you drawing cards and optimize Thor's "Have at Thee" ability and thereby speeding up Thors charging as you prioritize his God of Thunder cards.

"THAT HAMMER WAS TO HELP YOU CONTROL YOUR POWER, TO FOCUS IT....."

As soon as you have most if not all of Thor's God of Thunder upgrades: God of Thunder, Enhanced Reflexes, Resourceful. Now the God of Thunder is ready to turn the tide.

When Hall of Heroes has at least three counters are on it and the villains hit point are within reach of the end of the game or desired goal against the villain buy Thor time to charge up and get as many cards as possible by thwarting with Defender of the Nine Realms, Smash the Problem, basic thwarting using Limitless Stamina or To the Rescue! then flip to Odinson. Be sure that you have plenty of cushion on the main scheme to survive a phase of the villain scheming.

When in hero phase as Odinson exhaust Hall of Heroes draw three cards, if Asgard is in play you will then have ten cards, heal if desired or don't for an additional basic attack. Flip to Thor. If minions are in front of Thor activate "Have at Thee" and draw two more cards, play "Bring It!" to draw as many cards as there are minions on front of you.

"IT WAS NEVER YOUR SOURCE OF STRENGTH."

Clear the board of minions and damage the villain with Lightning Strike exhausting all of Thors God of Thunder upgrades delivering up to eight damage if all are used. You can also choose to discard additional energy resource cards from your hand for a bigger Lightning Strike. Follow your Lightning Strike up with Dive Bomb and/or Piercing Strike or deliver the finishing blow with a double Hammer Throw with Jarnbjorn (Stormbreaker) and Mjolnir.

The True Thor has Arrived!

"YOU GUYS ARE SO SCREWED NOW!"
