Marvel content creator D20woodworking made a short video where he featured and discussed the Warlock ally. He essentially determined that he might have some uses but is ultimately not that good. He asked the community to let him know if they had any builds with him. I decided to take on that challenge and did a build FOR him.
I will preface this with the fact that this is NOT likely going to take out the toughest scenarios, especially ones that really require rushdown. However, once it is built out it holds its own against a lot of challenges.
It’s not a hard concept. Play Warlock, add upgrades, do cool stuff. Warlock’s X-Factor trait works against him, though. He can’t run any of the good X-Men, Avenger, or Guardian upgrades without the OTHER upgrades that give him those traits. Spider-Woman seemed the best fit here as she can run both Leadership and Protection and can at least play Honorary Avenger. R&D Facility offers a resource and a little extra bang now and then.
To get Warlock, you have Call for Backup and Caliban, who is another ally I never really played but he fits here. Just know that he could very easily nab Multiple Man instead.
The deck is obviously very heavy on resources to be able to hit the healing ability on Warlock.
Once he’s fully built, he actually does really solid work. He can Thwart for 4 and ping twice, deal 4 damage and ping twice, or do 2 of each and still ping 2 damage. That’s good value every turn, and with Quincarrier out you’re guaranteed to be able to heal all the damage off. Clarity of Purpose is also a fun addition since you can eventually heal off the damage that causes while offering instant resources if you need them.
Spider-Woman’s cards, Multiple Man, and Momentum Shift can buy you time while you work on Warlock.
Is this a top-tier deck? No. Did I have fun working on it? Yes. Is it fun to run? For me it mostly was, especially when it worked to design and I got things in the right order.
Thanks to D20 for unintentionally issuing me the challenge.
