A nifty resource card that acts like a double resource, but more efficiently pays for 1-cost cards like Side Step, Never Back Down, and Preemptive Strike. I wouldn't call it a staple since you do need to have a critical mass of Defenses - otherwise the traditional double resource cards are better - but in the Flow Like Water archetype, this is a fantastic card.

An auto-include card in many Protection decks and a combo card that synergizes well with Magik in Protection aspect : with her hero's ability, Mutant Protectors or Magic Barrier + Defensive Energy flexibilize / accelerate the setup or the drawing in order to increase the odds for an or resource icon.

I have a doubt with this card. If, in a Magik deck I use this to pay for a Mutant Protectors while I have an ally on top of my deck, which resolves first ? The Mutant Protectors effect, or the Defensive Energy interrupt ? I would say that defensive energy must resolve first (if triggered), so you can't "setup" your ally with Limbo if you want to draw with Defensive Energy, I would thank if anybody can confirm me if I'm right or not.

Resources are always spent BEFORE the card they're paying for is played, so Defensive Energy must resolve first. However, I'm not even sure Magik could use an ally on top of her deck as a valid ally for Mutant Protectors. I might be too nitpicky, but her ability says "you may PLAY the top card of your deck as if it was in your hand, reducing its resource cost by 1", and technically there is a (slight) difference between "playing it" and "put it into play as an effect of playing another card". In fact, Magik's ability even specifies that the card's resource cost is reduced by 1, implying that you have to actually PAY (and play) that card, and you can't just put it into play as an effect of another card. I hope I explained myself clearly. — Michebugio · 32
