“Tell me about your father”

Sam Alexander has been through it. His dad was an alcoholic janitor who told wild stories about being an intergalactic space cop, then went missing, then turned out to be telling the truth, then “came back” except it was a clone, and the real one is maybe still alive somewhere out there. Sam inherited the helmet at 15, joined and quit the Avengers, co-founded a teen super-team, fell into a coma fighting a cosmic flame bird, lost the helmet for a while and spiraled into depression, got pulled into another dimension where a supervillain briefly became his new father figure, and now counts a silent cosmic immortal among his closest friends.

The kid could use a sit-down with someone trained.

Conveniently, this deck has two cards, Face the Past and Show of Empathy, so the theme picked itself. Sam is going to do the work. The deck plays as a strong all-around teammate with a thwart focus, and the headline payoff of doing the work turns out to be that even the guy who tried to commit genocide against his own species can become an ally.

Befriending Warbringer

Pull Warbringer with Face the Past, talk with him about your journey, give him a Show of Empathy, and let him join the team.

Healing is a journey.

Don’t be afraid to use Show of Empathy if a better minion comes out while waiting for Face the Path. But 15 damage across 5 turns is nice.

All-Around, With a Thwart Lean

Beyond the breakthrough moment, the deck does a bit of everything, but the heaviest finger is on thwart. Sam doesn’t have to carry the team alone (a good lesson for him). The Champions roster does most of the lifting:

  • Snowguard is a heavy thwarter
  • Vivian, well… is Vivian. It’s always nice to blank an annoying text box
  • Ironheart is a good blocker and deck cycler
  • Spider-Man flexes wherever you need
  • Wasp avoids crisis and can be a good blocker.

"Go for Champions!" can keep the team alive, while Champions Mobile Bunker helps you get to what you need (or Show of Empathy, Face the Past).

Infiltration loves Unleash Nova Force. Finish a side scheme, and get a new toy minion to enjoy.

Soaring Acrobatics is the Flex

Soaring Acrobatics is the deck’s tuner. Whatever stat the turn is asking for (THW, ATK, or DEF), Soaring Acrobatics can bump it. Don’t pre-commit. Hold it until you see what the board needs.

Don’t race. Settle in, get a couple Champions on the field, drop Show of Empathy, and let the breakthrough find you.

Face the Past -> Show of Empathy -> one of the most fun combos in the game. Warbringer is an awesome target for it!

Thanks, @boomguy. It was great seeing you this past weekend.

@MrSelfDestruct. Agreed. It’s a little degenerate, but if there’s anyone who can move through their deck quick enough for it, Nova is one of them.
