Listen up, Boomguy - Falcon is not only good, he can also be fun!
Falcon works well with any standard aerial deck, be it aggression with Dive bomb or leadership with Cloud 9 and Aero. But any aerial hero works well with those. With this small series of decks, I wanted to concentrate on the gimmicks that make Falcon Falcon.
This deck massively supports his ability to manipulate the encounter deck for his events and upgrades. The key points of this ability are:
-
Falcons reaction allows him to discard the top card of the encounter deck after he has played an aerial card. Apart from the many aerial cards in his hero kit, I have added three copies of Everywhere All at Once to hit his reaction a little more often each turn.
-
Falcon's events Bird of Prey and Bird's-Eye View, his signature ally Redwing and his upgrades Talon Line and Battlefield Awareness want to discard encounter cards with the highest possible number of symbols. There are several tricks in this deck to manipulate the encounter deck to always have a useful card with a lot of symbols on top, mainly:
-
Scarlet Witch discards the top card of the encounter deck. Play her if the top card is not useful for you and if it is not a treachery.
-
Use Wiccan to thwart, then deal damage to an enemy with his reaction and more important, get rid of an encounter card you don't want to use for your strong events and upgrades.
-
Blindfold also lets you view the top 5 cards of the encounter deck and discard one.
-
The hidden champion of this deck is Global Logistics. Complete manipulation of the top 4 cards of the encounter deck? Awesome! To trigger it, I included a few copies of Surveillance Tem. Homeland Security can also trigger off of these, if additional thwarting is necessary.
-
-
With these options, I had no issue triggering Falcon's events with two or three symbols each round, making them very cost-effective. If you have Talon Line out, try triggering it with at least two symbols to ready Falcon and stun the villain, which is easily doable with this deck.
Additional thoughts
The first iteration of this deck included Misty Knight, but he was too expensive so I rarely played him. Depending on the setup and villain, one could add a Skilled Investigator or more aerial thwarting in exchange for Turn the Tide.
Also, as this deck heavily manipulates the encounter deck and takes quite some time to pilot each turn, I would not recommend it in a setup with three or four players. I have only played it solo and with one other player, which worked fine.
Author's notes
Why the title? I often listen to Boomguy's podcast "Winning Hand" (https://www.youtube.com/@WinningHandPodcast) and really enjoy it. In the last few episodes, Boomguy has repeatedly stated that he doesn't enjoy playing Falcon and has encouraged his listeners to send him decks to change his mind. As I really like Falcon, I had to try! :D Seriously, the podcast is very good, give it a listen!
