Introduction
Shadowcat is the queen of perfect defense. Let's see how she likes the new Civil War events.
The goal of this deck is to defend for the whole table while generally taking 0 damage. This is a multiplayer-only deck that severely lacks thwarting and burst damage, but makes up for it with insane tanking potential and a fair bit of chip damage.
This deck is specifically tuned to duo with Colossus Justice, although it's a pretty well-rounded Kitty deck even without Piotr's help.
Deckbuilding notes
Since we're trying to defend for everybody, we have to solve a few problems:
- Defending multiple times per round
- Surviving all of the defenses, preferably by being phased
Tools for defending multiple times:
- "I Can Do This All Day" is effectively a 2 ER ready so we can defend multiple times; basically the going rate.
- Cuts Both Ways can reliably do 2+ damage and make us the defender for 1 ER. That has potential.
Tools for getting back into phased:
- Powerful Punch is an auto-include for its ability to flip us and make us the defender in a neat little package.
- Counter-Punch is also an essential tool for Shadowcat, allowing her to flip back to phased immediately after defending at 0 cost.
The rest of the deck is basically a bunch of staples that complement our events:
- Unflappable is the biggest payoff.
- Nerves of Steel pays for many of our events.
- Deft Focus pays for Shadowcat's base kit (9 targets).
- Electrostatic Armor is very efficient chip damage.
- Flow Like Water rewards us for playing the defense events we were already going to play (and is fun).
- Change of Fortune is a little tricky, but we have the tools to pull it off.
- Night Nurse helps keep stun clear (which is important for flipping back to Phased).
- X-Jet helps us pay for everything (at Resource speed).
- Jocasta is our personal tutor. Quick Shift is worth 2 cards, effectively making Jocasta cost 2 ER net for 2 thwart and a chump block. Solid!
We are running a few cards heavy, but that's fine. I don't recommend cutting any events because we need to see them reliably. You could cut some of the non-essential upgrades, but they are simply too fun (and pretty strong).
Rules reminders
"I Can Do This All Day" effect:
When a card ability says to “declare [a hero] the defender” of an attack, that hero is considered to be making a basic defense. In other words, "I Can Do This All Day" makes us the defender and applies our DEF.
Timing order:
The attack finishes resolving and the following types of abilities trigger in order:
- The retaliate X keyword (if the attacked character is still in play).
- Forced abilities with the following triggers (in any order):
- “after [character] attacks [and damages/defeats] [you/an ally]...”
- “after [character] is attacked...”
- “after [character] defends [and takes no damage]...”
- “after [character] [takes/deals] damage...”
- Non-forced abilities with the triggers listed above
Sideboard
- Excelsior is a fun idea, but didn't make the cut. Feel free to include it for more damage potential.
- Remove Shadow and Steel if not playing with Colossus.
