Welcome to my Heroic Roulette deck series for the Core Set! I've previously completed this challenge with the Sinister Motives box and 4/5 of the Mutant Genesis box. The goal is to craft decklists for a specific hero vs. scenario matchup and to win on heroic difficulty. Additionally, against scenarios from the same box, each aspect must be used at least once.
Here is my first set of decks from the Sinister Motives challenge: https://marvelcdb.com/decklist/view/22146/nova-vs-venom-goblin-heroic-roulette-1.0
And here is the 4/5 I completed for Mutant Genesis: https://marvelcdb.com/decklist/view/30996/storm-vs-mansion-attack-heroic-roulette-1.0
I'm circling back to the Core Set after starting this challenge as a way to play the recent campaign releases. You'll note that the heroes I've used are from the Core Set, but any cards currently legal are fair to include, not just Core Set cards.
Matchup:
Rhino is one of the easiest villains in the game, so I wanted to use up one of the weaker heroes for this challenge. Additionally, Charge is one of the riskiest encounter cards, so it's nice to start with a high-hp hero. I didn't have a clear pull into leadership but knew that between Rhino and Klaw, one would use leadership and one justice (Aggression is so good vs. Ultron). Leadership has an easy time ally blocking Rhino's big attacks, so I went with that.
I like to play Rhino with the Armadillo mod set for the tough status synergy. This is a fun change that I encourage you to try out!
Gameplan:
Rhino is entirely susceptible to stun and confuse, so we want to do that as much as possible. With enough of that and allies to block, we can play a little loose with She-Hulk's hp and get her low enough for a high-power Gamma Slam. Do your best to keep tough statuses off Rhino so "I'm Tough" doesn't have surge and Tough and Tumble doesn't lead to an activation. Keep some damage sustained on Rhino too so Hard to Keep Down doesn't have surge.
Card choices:
Black Knight - a strong answer to all the tough cards
Mirage - the quintessential card for my Heroic Roulette challenge because I can never recommend putting this card in a generic deck, but against this particular villain with 1 SCH on stages 2 and 3, she is incredible.
Clarity of Purpose - an excellent resource generator since She-Hulk has lots of health and a huge REC stat
1x Deft Focus, 3x Limitless Stamina - leadership decks always have a tricky time finding things to do once your ally slots are full. She-Hulk has a few Superpowers already to justify Deft Focus, and Stamina helps you get even more value from it.
Game review: 1 win, 0 loss
There was at least one turn where an Advance into a 3-icon boost would have lost me the game, but other than that it was smooth sailing. It felt like I had 2 or 3 too many allies in the deck, and that led to lots of inefficient turns where I binned an ally in order to play a new one. The matchup is easy enough, though, that you can get away with that and still feel very safe.
Next time
My next matchup is Captain Marvel Justice (S.H.I.E.L.D.) vs. Klaw + Crossfire's Crew. See you there!
