Welcome back to Precon Recon! For those just tuning in, we have a series of complimentary articles that delve into the core characters and their FFG precon counterparts over on BGG. For Iron Man's breakdown, head on over here: https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/2742324/1-2-punchboards-precon-recon-iron-man

Back already? Good, because we're going to show off how Iron Man is well suited (pun intended) to take on villains in his classic leadership role.

The Money of the Operation

Iron Man has never been shy with using his money for the betterment of the world, and what better way than to fund an Avengers team? You'll need teammates of course, and Tony has pulled a diverse cast from across the Avengers roster, including his close friends Wonder Man and Ant-Man, younger Avengers in training like Kate Bishop, Squirrel Girl, and Stinger, and the mysterious Ronin (who knows who it is this time!). Next, you'll need some equipment to help the operation run smoothly. Avengers Tower, a Quincarrier, a Quinjet, and the Triskelion should help make things move smoothly, but to take into the front lines, some Power Gloves and Reinforced Suits should do nicely. Oh, and bring your old, crummy Plasma Pistol along too, just in case. Throw in some Mighty Avengers attitude, shout some inspirational words here and there, and we should be good to go, right?

Let's Overwhelm Them, Folks

This is a swarm deck, through and through. Get allies out there, use them as best you can, and let them cycle out as need be. The biggest difference being that in those terrible turns when you aren't pulling any of your hero techs you need, you can always outfit someone else to help you move forward. With all cheap allies, you can suit up someone and keep yourself helpful while hanging out in Alter-Ego. Ant-Man or Ronin can be dealing with the threat while you build up your engine to unleash a whole lot of hell. Core techs will always take priority, but these give you some flexible options.

And yes, the Plasma Pistol is garbage. We know. But it's better to have a spare tech lying around, just in case.

Most of your allies is here to get beefed up temporarily before hitting the road, but you'll want to keep them around a little while, since those techs aren't cheap and, again, are helping out your hand size for now. So, stuff like Team Training and particularly Reinforced Suit will help keep allies in play for a bit longer.

And once you get your engine up and running, you'll want to swing with your big attack events and Avengers Assemble and all that until the enemy is down.

Over time, I could definitely see this Avengers roster shift, just as I could see Captain America's, but for now, I view this as a pretty strong team when focusing on cheaper allies. Vision could be great here too, but he's a little pricey for the playstyle we're aiming for.

Of course, let us know your thoughts on this deck down below, and we'll see you next time!

Nice deck! Allies and Iron Man go well together, as Iron Man really benefits from getting allies out to keep the villain from winning until Iron Man has his suit built. And Iron Man handing out tech to his allies is very thematic.

I struggle, though, with adding upgrades and supports to Iron Man's deck other than resource-generating ones. Early on, you need to get allies out and build your suit, and I'm not sure you want to slow down either by getting side-tracked into other upgrades like Mighty Avengers or Team Training. By the time you can afford the luxury of playing these cards, they're pretty much no longer needed - impactful, but more of a "win more" impact. Team Training in particular I'd consider swapping out for another Mental or Energy card.

Not that it isn't fun or thematic to win the game with a late game buffed-ally swarm. It just seems less impactful for Iron Man, who is his own late game buffed villain-buster once his suit is built.

I think that's some solid feedback, @HalifaxBrent, I agree that this deck could use some tweaking. Phil and I were talking about potentially putting Captain America in this deck since we're swarming Avengers, so that could definitely replace Team Training, since Mighty Avengers at least has an energy resource. But yeah, I think with time, other cards could make it's way in and out of this deck as more allies are added to the pool.

I should have noted that my comments were coming from a true solo perspective. Played multi-player, there's likely more time to get some of the other upgrades and support into play, and an ally rush to supplement or replace Iron Man's own attacks could be of greater value.

Fair enough, @HalifaxBrent; we make decks with 2-player in mind most regularly, as that's how we approach the game.
